On the occasion of the 5th founding anniversary of the Philippine Competition Commission on February 1, I thank you for your unstinting support, partnership, and contribution, helping in no small measure to bring the Commission to where it stands today.
The first five years of PCC have shown great promise, never short of challenges, but always ready to contribute to the performance of the markets and the economy. Against a backdrop of many competing priorities, the role and relevance of competition policy in the country are again brought to the fore in the face of the economic crisis.
The drive to create a culture of competition does not stop because of the pandemic, however. In fact, ensuring a robust competition regime has become even more relevant and critical now to protect Filipino consumers and businesses alike and ultimately ensure a durable and inclusive recovery. We at the PCC fully recognize this crucial responsibility.
As in previous years, we celebrate our anniversary with PCC’s flagship conference, the Forum on Competition in Developing Countries (F-CDC). To be held on Feb 22-23, this year’s Manila Forum will be an excellent platform to reflect on issues attendant to merger reviews, enforcement, sector reviews, and competition policy.
In the midst of the pandemic’s challenges, we in PCC remain committed to our mandate and will continue to work tirelessly for policy and institutional reforms required to have a pro-competitive environment in the country.
As we look ahead, we continue to enjoin your partnership in our quest to uphold the competition law and ensure fair business practice in the country.
Arsenio M. Balisacan, PhD
